Soon after setting out you climb to the collegiate church of Ziortza (Zenarruza) in Bolibar, with its Gothic church and small Renaissance cloister. Then quiet valleys to Gernika, home of the Tree of Gernika, symbol of Basque liberties, in a town bombed in 1937.
