The best time to walk the Camino, month by month
Temperatures, rain, crowds and open albergues from January to December.
There is no perfect month; there is a perfect month for you. This is the real picture.
Spring (April–June)
The most recommended season. Green fields, 12–22 °C, long days. It still rains in Galicia in April and May. Easter and the May bank holidays fill the last 100 km.
Summer (July–August)
Strong heat on the plateau (35 °C) and peak crowds: in August 2024 over 60,000 pilgrims reached Santiago. Everything is open, but you must book and start before 7. Galician summers are milder.
Autumn (September–October)
For many the best time: fewer people than in summer, grape harvest in La Rioja and El Bierzo, 10–20 °C. In October rain and fog return to Galicia, and some private albergues close at the end of the month.
Winter (November–March)
Quiet and cheap, but many albergues are closed, days have 9 hours of light and snow is possible at Roncesvalles, O Cebreiro and the Cruz de Ferro. Only for experienced walkers with proper gear. Xunta albergues stay open all year.
Holy Year 2027
When 25 July falls on a Sunday it is a Holy Year. The next one is 2027 and a record is expected: book months ahead, especially between Sarria and Santiago.
