Camino de Santiago at Easter 2027: dates, route and booking

Holy Week 2027 runs from 21 to 28 March, in the middle of the Holy Year. Which section to walk in a week, what weather to expect and when to book.

In 2027, Holy Week runs from Palm Sunday, 21 March, to Easter Sunday, 28 March. It is the first big peak of the Holy Year: the Holy Door opens on 31 December 2026 and, with several days off in a row, the last 100 km fill up sooner than in any ordinary spring.

You can walk that week. You just need to settle the section, the start day and the beds early.

Which section fits in a week

Seven or eight free days are enough for the 100 km the Compostela requires. Three options:

  • Sarria to Santiago, 115 km in five stages. The classic, and also the busiest at Easter. Sarria to Santiago guide.
  • Tui to Santiago, 118 km in six stages on the Camino Portugués. Lively, without the pressure of the Francés. Guide from Tui.
  • Ferrol to Santiago, 112 km on the Camino Inglés. The quietest of the three in March, with fewer rooms, so book it just as early. Camino Inglés guide.

A schedule that works

The lowest-stress plan for the Francés:

  1. Saturday 20 March: arrive in Sarria and get your credential stamped.
  2. Sunday 21 to Thursday 25: five walking stages.
  3. Maundy Thursday, 25: reach Santiago around midday.
  4. Friday 26 and Saturday 27: spare time in case a stage runs long, the Compostela and the city.

Arriving before Good Friday pays off: the Pilgrim’s Office and the Obradoiro square get busier the closer Sunday comes.

Flexible dates? The week before, 14 to 20 March, is much quieter. The week after Easter is still busy. See it week by week in the 2027 crowd calendar.

Weather in late March

In Santiago, March brings lows around 5 °C and highs of 15 °C, with rain almost every other day. Pack a proper rain jacket, a warm layer for the early hours and boots you have already broken in. The rest is on the packing list.

One detail few people plan for: clocks go forward on Easter Sunday, 28 March. From that day it gets light after 8:30, so early starts happen in the dark. Bring a headlamp.

When to book

Now. In Sarria, Portomarín, Palas de Rei, Arzúa and O Pedrouzo, private rooms for Easter sell out months ahead, and in a Holy Year even sooner. Expect €45–60 a night in a guesthouse or rural house.

Book all five or six nights in a row before you buy your flights. If one night falls through, that stage stops working and so does the rest. Each Xacobea stage page lists the lodging at the end of the stage with dated prices; if it is full, look at the village before or after.

For everything that changes this year, read the Holy Year 2027 guide, and for the stamps, how to get the Compostela.

If you would rather have it all booked for you, ask for a quote for your Easter Camino while dates are still open.

Frequently asked questions

Is Easter week a holiday in Spain in 2027?

Good Friday (26 March) is a national holiday and Maundy Thursday (25 March) usually is in almost every region. That is why Spanish walkers share the trail with the rest of Europe that week.

Does the Holy Year change how you earn the Compostela?

No. You still need 100 km on foot and two stamps a day. What changes is the cathedral’s Holy Door, open throughout 2027.
