Camino Portugués from Tui in 6 days

The six Galician stages of the central Portugués: km, climbs, where to stay and the Spiritual Variant.

Tui is 119 km from Santiago and comfortably meets the 100 km rule for the Compostela. It is the easiest start on the Portugués: train from Vigo, a cathedral, an old town and a public albergue by the river Miño.

The six stages

  1. Tui – O Porriño, 17 km. Take the Ribadelouro detour and skip the As Gándaras industrial estate.
  2. O Porriño – Redondela, 16 km. Climb to Mos and descend with views of the Vigo estuary.
  3. Redondela – Pontevedra, 20 km. Arcade (oysters), the Ponte Sampaio bridge and the prettiest city on the route.
  4. Pontevedra – Caldas de Reis, 21 km. Gentle, through vineyards. Caldas has public thermal springs.
  5. Caldas – Padrón, 19 km. The Valga forest and Pontecesures. Padrón peppers at the end.
  6. Padrón – Santiago, 25 km. The longest; O Milladoiro and the entrance through Porta Faxeira.

Spiritual Variant

From Pontevedra you can go via Combarro, Armenteira and the river Umia, with a boat from Vilanova to Padrón (3 days instead of 2). Prettier and quieter, but the boat must be booked.

Budget

With Xunta public albergues (€10) and pilgrim menus, about €35 a day. Book in Pontevedra and Padrón in high season.
