A climb along the Roman road of A Brea and arrival in Pontevedra, with the Peregrina church (scallop-shell plan), the basilica of Santa María and an exemplary pedestrian old town. It is 18.2 km with 320 m of climbing in two short ascents, before Arcade and after Ponte Sampaio, never above 147 m. Arcade, at 7 km, has a shop and pharmacy.
Pontevedra is the capital of the Rías Baixas and the largest city on the Camino Portugués before Santiago. Its sanctuary of the Pilgrim Virgin, begun in 1778, has a scallop-shell floor plan, and the Peregrina is patron of the province and of the Camino Portugués.

The city is named after a bridge: in the Middle Ages it was Pontis Veteris, «old bridge». The mariners' guild paid for the basilica of Santa María a Maior in the 16th century.
Before arriving, the Camino crosses Ponte Sampaio, where in June 1809 Spanish forces defeated Marshal Ney and ended the French occupation of Galicia.
Legend has it that the city was founded by Teucer, a Greek archer of the Trojan War. The Praza do Teucro bears his name today.
Closer to our time is Ravachol, the parrot of Perfecto Feijóo's pharmacy, famous for mimicking voices. His symbolic funeral is one of the most popular events of the city's carnival.
As you enter the Peregrina, look at the large holy-water shell: Admiral Méndez Núñez brought it from the Pacific.
