What you will see on the way
Moratinos and San Nicolás del Real Camino, with wine cellars dug into the hills, lead to Sahagún, capital of Castilian Mudéjar: San Tirso and San Lorenzo, the San Benito arch and the Peregrina sanctuary, which issues the half-way Carta Peregrina. Bercianos del Real Camino closes the stage with its church and an old tradition of pilgrim hospitality. It is all flat. There are bars in Moratinos and San Nicolás del Real Camino, and Sahagún (km 13.1) is the only stop with a pharmacy, ATM and doctor. After it there is no village for 10.3 km: fill your water in Sahagún.
History of Bercianos del Real Camino
Bercianos del Real Camino is a village in the province of León on the Camino Francés, whose name recalls its first settlers, who came from El Bierzo. It already appears in mid-10th-century donations to the monastery of Sahagún, and in the late 12th century it had a pilgrim hospital dependent on the one at O Cebreiro.
A lagoon, a much-loved patron Virgin and a legend of souls turned into birds.

Anecdotes, curiosities and legends
The Church of El Salvador once had a slender tower reflected in the lagoon below it, until it collapsed; a plain belfry stands in its place today.
Legend has it that during a war between Leonese and Castilians, a warrior named Gerinaldo attacked the village on a stormy night.

If you pass on 8 September you will catch the feast of the Virgen de Perales, the village’s patron.
