Camino Portugués Coastal: the complete guide from Porto
Stages, the Caminha boat, where to start for the Compostela and how it differs from the central route.
The Coastal Portugués is the fastest growing Camino: the sea on your left almost all the way, wooden boardwalks and fishing towns. It is 265 km from Porto and 12–14 days.
Portuguese section (Porto – Caminha)
Four flat stages along seafront promenades: Vila do Conde, Esposende, Viana do Castelo and Caminha. Lots of tarmac and boardwalk; comfortable trainers beat boots here.
Crossing the Minho
At Caminha you take a boat to A Guarda (Galicia). It depends on the tide: check the timetable the day before at the town hall or your hotel reception. If there is no boat, a private water taxi or a bus to Valença to continue on the central route.
Galician section (A Guarda – Redondela)
The wild coast of Oia, its monastery, Baiona with its fortress and the Vigo estuary. In Vigo the route crosses the city on the water path, with views of the Cíes islands. At Redondela it joins the central route.
Where to start for the Compostela
- Baiona (≈130 km): convenient, with buses from Vigo.
- A Guarda (≈160 km): includes Oia and Baiona.
- Vigo: under 100 km, does not count.
Coastal or central
Choose the coast for sea, flat walking and wind; the central route for history, shade and a wider choice of hotels and guesthouses. They combine well: coast to Redondela and central to Santiago is what almost everyone does.
