How the stages are worked out

We start from the official length of each stage and the villages with a pilgrim hostel along the way. Using your daily pace, we look for the end point closest to that distance each day, favouring stage towns, which have more beds and services. If there is nowhere to sleep between two towns, the day gets longer and we flag it. The last day always ends at the end of the route.

    Which pace to choose

A first-time pilgrim walks comfortably 15 to 20 km a day; with some training, 20 to 25; and a regular hiker, 25 to 30. Beyond 30 km a day blisters and tendon pain become far more common, especially from day three. If in doubt, pick the easy pace: it is always easier to walk an extra stage than to recover from an injury.

    Elevation matters too

We add up the metres of climbing on each day. As a rule of thumb, 500 metres of ascent equals one more hour of walking. Days such as the climb to O Cebreiro or over the Pyrenees call for a slower pace even with strong legs. To earn the Compostela you only need to walk the last 100 km, so starting in Sarria, Tui or Ferrol counts.

    Frequently asked questions

How many km a day do pilgrims walk on the Camino?

Most walk 20 to 25 km. Classic stages are around 22 km, but you can shorten or stretch them to suit your fitness.

How many days does it take from Sarria?

It is about 115 km: five days at a medium pace, or six to seven at an easy pace. Enter Sarria in the calculator to see it with your date.

    Can I share my plan?

Yes. The copy link button stores the route, start, pace and date in the address, so anyone who opens it sees the same plan.

    Should I book every night?

In high season and on the last 100 km booking is wise. You can do it yourself from each town page or ask us to organise it.
