What you will see on the way
Hilltop Grañón keeps a fortress church and a tradition of pilgrim hospitality famous for its communal dinners; Redecilla del Camino opens Castile with a Romanesque baptismal font. Viloria de Rioja is Santo Domingo’s birthplace. Belorado, below a hill with hermit caves, keeps its arcaded square and street murals. The climb is continuous but barely noticeable. Villages come every 2 to 6 km: Grañón (km 6.4) has a shop, Redecilla del Camino and Castildelgado bars. The last bar before Belorado is in Villamayor del Río, 4.8 km from the end.
History of Belorado
Belorado, in the province of Burgos, received a charter from Alfonso I the Battler in 1116 granting self-government, a market and a fair, considered the oldest documented fair in Spain. The town sits by the Tirón river, below the remains of a castle that guarded the route between La Rioja and the Castilian plateau.
A fair with more than nine centuries of history and hermits' caves carved beneath the castle.
What not to miss in Belorado
- Church of Santa María: rebuilt in the 16th century, with St James as pilgrim and as Moor-slayer
- Plaza Mayor: 16th-century arcaded square with the church of San Pedro
- Caves of San Caprasio: old hermitages below the castle
Origins and the Camino
In the Middle Ages it was called Belforatus and lay on the frontier between Castile and Navarre. Alfonso I the Battler, who entered Castile along the Camino de Santiago, fortified the town and resettled it.
Anecdotes, curiosities and legends
Belorado's coat of arms shows a tower and a star, a symbol of Compostela, with the motto «Lord, show me your ways». The hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Belén was once a pilgrims' hospital.
Pilgrim tip
Climb behind the church of Santa María towards the caves and the remains of the keep: the view over the town and the Tirón valley is worth the short slope.
