History of Neda
Neda is a small town at the head of the Ferrol estuary and the end of the first stage of the Camino Inglés from Ferrol. Its churches of San Nicolás (15th century) and Santa María (18th century) belonged to an old pilgrims' hospital placed under the protection of the Holy Spirit.
Just before town, the Camino skirts a Romanesque monastery; once you cross the Xubia bridge, Neda greets you with the smell of fresh bread.

Origins and the Camino
The history of Neda is tied to the River Belelle, whose mills powered a busy bread-making trade for centuries. Neda bread is known all over Galicia, and the town even holds its own bread festival, the Festa do Pan.
Anecdotes, curiosities and legends
According to local history, in the 16th century Philip II chose Neda for the so-called Casas Reales, ovens that baked ship's biscuit for the Spanish Navy. The clean water of the Belelle and the nearby port of Ferrol tipped the balance.
Legend has it that a secret passage linked a manor house on the Neda shore with the monastery of San Martiño de Xubia across the estuary, and that the monks crossed through it every night.

Buy a loaf of Neda bread at a village bakery for the next day's walk: it is the tastiest way into the town's history.

Ferrol’s Holy Week is documented as far back as 1616, and its processions are among the most striking in the north-west. It has been a Festival of International Tourist Interest since 2014.
