What you will see on the way
Nigrán and Patos beach, a climb through Priegue with views of the Cíes, and entry into Vigo along the Senda da Traída das Augas, a path high above the city. Vigo, Galicia’s largest city, with the Casco Vello, the harbour and the oysters of A Pedra.
History of Vigo
Vigo is the most populous city in Galicia and the end of the seventh stage of the Portuguese Coastal Camino. On 28 March 1809 its people forced the surrender of the Napoleonic garrison, an event remembered every year at the Reconquista festival.
For three centuries people have searched its estuary for the treasure of the Rande galleons.

Origins and the Camino
A pre-Roman settlement stood on O Castro hill. The present Neoclassical co-cathedral was built in the early decades of the 19th century.
French troops occupied the town on 31 January 1809. The garrison surrendered on 28 March, and King Ferdinand VII granted Vigo the title of «faithful, loyal and valiant» city.
Anecdotes, curiosities and legends
On 23 October 1702, during the War of the Spanish Succession, an Anglo-Dutch fleet attacked the Spanish treasure fleet and its French escort in the San Simón inlet. Almost every ship was captured, sunk or burned.
Legend has it that the gold and silver still lie at the bottom of the estuary. Jules Verne made Captain Nemo the first hunter of that treasure in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas.
