History of Mougás
Mougás is a coastal parish in the municipality of Oia (Pontevedra), where the fifth stage of the Portuguese Coastal Camino ends. Just before it, the route passes the monastery of Santa María de Oia, Cistercian since 1185 and the only monastery of that order facing the sea.
Between the hills and the sea, Mougás holds rock carvings and a hillfort, and a few kilometres away live the stories of Oia's artillery monks.

Origins and the Camino
In the Serra da Groba above Mougás lies the A Cabeciña hillfort, a fortified Iron Age settlement with petroglyphs of circles and cup marks.
Anecdotes, curiosities and legends
In 1624 the Oia monks turned their cannons on Turkish pirates attacking a French and an English ship, and they have been known as the artillery monks ever since.
Tradition says the monastery was founded by Saint Martin of Dumio or Saint Fructuosus in the 6th or 7th century, though no document confirms it.
Pilgrim tip
The monastery is privately owned: admire its façade from the seafront path.
Legends & tradition
A Guarda and its lobster
Before the coastal walk, A Guarda is a lobster port and celebrates it with its own food festival. Its calendar also includes a swordfish cook-off and a festival of the rosca de yema, an egg-yolk ring cake.
