What you will see on the way
A moorland stage. Castrojeriz spreads out below its castle with the collegiate church of Santa María del Manzano. Leaving Hornillos you climb onto the plateau at 920 m, and the way stays high and open. Hontanas (km 10.4) is the only village with a bar and shop on the whole stage: before it lie 10 km without services and after it another 9.6.
History of Castrojeriz
Castrojeriz is a town on the Camino Francés in the province of Burgos which in 974 received from Count Garci Fernández one of the oldest town charters in Spain. Its Calle Real is one of the longest urban stretches on the whole Camino de Santiago.
You arrive beneath the arches of a ruined convent, with a castle watching from the hill.

Origins and the Camino
It all began on the hilltop, in a Vaccaean fort later Romanised; in the early days of Castile it was the seat of Count Nuño Núñez.
Its charter of 974 made a knight of anyone who went to war on horseback, and between the 12th and 16th centuries the Camino brought its golden age.
Anecdotes, curiosities and legends
Four kilometres before town, the Camino passes beneath the arches of the convent of San Antón, founded in 1146, whose Antonine monks cared for victims of «Saint Anthony's fire»; their tau symbol is still carved in the stones.
Legend has it that Saint James leapt on horseback from the hill and landed on a hollow apple tree where an image of the Virgin appeared: the Virgen del Manzano, a Gothic statue praised by Alfonso X in his Cantigas.
