Albergue vs hotel or guesthouse on the Camino
Updated:
If you want to sleep well and walk without racing for a bed, a private room in a guesthouse, rural house or hotel gives you rest, your own bathroom and a guaranteed booking. Albergues are cheaper (Xunta public ones are about €10 a bed) but they are bunks in shared dorms and public ones cannot be booked.

- Confirmed booking: you know where you sleep every night, which matters on the last 100 km and in a Holy Year.
- Rest: no snoring or curfews; most have a private bathroom.
- Price: higher than an albergue and very variable by month and town; sharing a double brings it down.

Frequently asked questions
How much does an albergue cost on the Camino?
The Xunta public albergues in our directory charge €10 a bed (September 2026). Private ones usually cost a bit more.
Can I book public albergues?
No. They work on a first-come, first-served basis.
Is a guesthouse or a hotel better?
It depends on the town: in many the private option is a guesthouse or rural house. What matters is a booked private room.
Do I need a credential to stay in a hotel?
No. Only pilgrim albergues ask for it; you still need it stamped for the Compostela.
