      Xacobea/Getting home from Santiago

Getting home from Santiago de Compostela

      Updated: October 24, 2026

You have three ways home from Santiago: fly from Santiago-Rosalía de Castro airport, about 10 km from the centre and linked by bus; take a high-speed train to Madrid from Santiago station; or go by bus. Book your return early: the 2027 Holy Year will be busy.

      By plane

      • Santiago-Rosalía de Castro airport is about 10 km north-east of the city. (Source: Aena, accessed 24/10/2026)
      • A bus line links the city with the airport; there are also buses from the airport to Lugo and to A Coruña bus station. (Source: Aena, accessed 24/10/2026)
      • Check the current bus timetable on the Aena page before you go. (Source: Aena, accessed 24/10/2026)

      By train

      • High-speed trains (AVE and Avlo) run between Santiago and Madrid on the Galicia corridor. (Source: Renfe, accessed 24/10/2026)
      • Check current timetables and fares with Renfe: services on this corridor have changed several times since 2024. (Source: Renfe, accessed 24/10/2026)

      By bus

For long trips (Madrid, Porto, other Galician cities) check each company’s website: timetables change by season.

      Before you leave

      • Collect your Compostela in good time: the Pilgrim’s Office opens every day from 9:00 to 19:00, except 25 December and 1 January, and on very busy days it cannot guarantee same-day collection. (Source: Pilgrim’s Office, accessed 24/10/2026)
      • If your flight or train leaves late, leave your pack in left-luggage storage and enjoy the day.
