History and what to see
By mid-morning you drop into Mondoñedo, a bishop’s seat since the Middle Ages. Its cathedral, with a large 14th-century Gothic rose window, presides over an arcaded square. The writer Álvaro Cunqueiro was born here. Then comes a long climb through pines up to Abadín.

As San Lucas, the oldest fair
Around 18 October, Mondoñedo holds As San Lucas, considered Galicia’s oldest fair in continuous operation. It goes back to a charter granted by King Alfonso VII in 1156, and horses have always been its stars.
